GrainSense Analyzer Improves Wheat Selection Process in a Research Institute
Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (IFVCNS) - National Institute of the Republic of Serbia has been using the GrainSense Handheld Analyzer for the selection purposes. The small sample size and location data provide brand new advantages to the reserach team in measuring their samples.
The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad was established in 1938. The main activity of the Institute is basic and applied research, aimed at development of cultivars and hybrids of field and vegetable crops, forage and industrial crops, medicinal plants, and spices. The fundamental activity of the Institute has been divided among eight departments, two laboratories and two service-providing units. The department of small grains develops more than 300 wheat cultivars, 100 barley cultivars, about 20 triticale and 20 oat cultivars.
The Team from the Institute explains:
“We learned about the GrainSense Analyzer from Labena d.o.o. - Serbia because we needed a device for breeding of new cultivars that is capable to non-destructively measure small mass samples.”
"At our laboratory we analyze the quality of new lines and cultivars as well as the quality of samples infected with various pathogens. One of examined quality properties is the protein content, which in addition to grain yield, is one of the most important parameters for wheat."
“Main advantage of the GrainSense Analyzer is a small sample size.”
Wheat lines from the F4 breeding generation provide only from 50 to 60 wheat kernels, which is enough for measuring with the GrainSense Handheld Analyzer. Determination of the protein content of wheat samples from the F4 generation enables the rejection of lines with too low value of this parameter from further selection. This way, large number of time-consuming analyses on wheat samples from the F6 generation will be avoided and savings on sample handling and storage will be achieved. Besides, it is a portable device that allows measuring in the experimental fields and as additional data gives very precise geographical coordinates. Using the coordinate’s data, experiment in the field can be monitored and checked.
As a result of the above mentioned, the Team of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad assessed that the GrainSense Analyzer is very applicable for breeding purposes and for the research institutes examine the impact of pathogens or heat stress on wheat quality in greenhouse conditions.
